Closing the Plant!
This small community only really had two main employers, and now that one will be closing, everyone is in a totally panic. While picking up medicine, I overheard three different families discussing this issue. I wanted to block out their conversations, but who can ignore a teary voice and a choked speech? The woman speaking had just mortgaged a new home. She literally broke down crying in the store.
Stanley's Furniture has been a constant place holder in Graham County for years. All of my family has worked there sometime or another. It is unfortunate that we will suffer this loss. Grandma said that most people who work there are used to making " good money," and since they only other jobs are Ingles, McDonalds, or the various dollar stores, our community will fail. I believe she called it the " ghost town effect." I live here, but I also have a long commute to work everyday, and most people aren't willing to do the same. Where will all these people go?
This is a praying community that has a church in every corner. Any building bigger than a normal size house could and possibly is a church. I was informed by a upstanding person that this has made the top of the prayer list. "We don't like change around here," is something I've heard all my life, and most of the elders would probably state that. Prayer is a power tool and hopefully we have a prayer's chance that someone or something will intervene before it's too late.
