Reading with the Kids
Parents please be advised that reading with your kids is NOT a health hazard. In fact they will benefit from the practice, and it will probably help them have positive memories of you. It's perfectly fine to spend quality time with your kids. I honestly encourage every parent to utilize this strategy.
Kids have missed the opportunities to actually learn how to read. Too often have I had kids who could not even sound out words, and this saddens me. What will our future be like? Struggling readers in middle school become struggling readers in high school too. Teaching students to read independently should be universal in every subject.
I remember being in school and forgetting my homework. My mom knew what was going on before I got off the bus that afternoon and the teacher hadn't even called. That is something else that I need to address about living in a small town. Everyone knows your business and when you aren't doing your homework every parent decides that they should tell your mom. My mom spent most evenings with me doing homework and reading from a library book. Our library is small, but you could request books from the neighboring communities. Sometimes it would take hours to find a book that was decent to read, and something my mom would want to hear read aloud.
Reading comprehension can be aided by fluency. Parents can do their part by having their children read with them. My father is illiterate. Yes, even in today's society we still have illiterate people. He made it to the tenth grade and didn't even know how to write a full sentence or read. Back then education wasn't important, but in today's society we need people to read at lease on a fifth grade level. I believe the newspapers are on a 4-5th grade level. I just cannot image not being able to sit and pick up a good book. Where did we go wrong? READ WITH YOUR KIDS AND ENCOURAGE THEM TO DO THEIR BEST IN SCHOOL! ONE DAY THEY MIGHT NEED THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE THAT THEY HAVE MISSED!
