Unpopular Opinion
Being a Social Studies teacher is sometimes seen as the "easy" job or the one reserved for coaches. I have never seen it as an easy job by no means. It is my job to provide instruction on historical events, geography, primary sources, world religions, current events and help make a connection to content. That is a completely different topic than the one I want to speak on today. SPELLING is my focal point. Even as a teacher I misspell things and make minor errors. Even on this blog I do not go back and edit. I do not have time for those tedious tasks. So here is my opinion: kids can make spelling errors in my class.
I'm not going to ding a kid for misspelling things because we live in a modern world where technology takes precedence over everything. Some of my kids utilize text to speech apps. Before you ask this is Gen Ed kids that use it too. We do a lot of handwritten assignments in my room. This is where I get to see their true writing abilities and who is lacking in basic skills. This is where I can do editing in the moment. Simple mistakes are often what I focus on.
There is an importance of spelling things correctly. If we are doing computer based assignments, I will count off for misspelled items. Handwritten assignments are just of a different caliber in my opinion. This is especially true for journaling.
I once had a teacher that would make you write out misspelled words one hundred times and then she would call you out to spell it in front of your peers. I AM NOT that teacher. My embracement as a student had made me rethink spelling as a whole. I know there are many mistakes in my blogs, but I'm okay with that. If you don't like it, you don't have to read over them.
