Weird Phone Call
Strangely enough my husband was off from work today. We don't usually get to see one another but on rare occasions. My phone rang and this lady was on the other end. She was frantic and wanted to know our set up. The weird part was that she kept saying, "when I was there last I saw." She sent me images and requested that I take in her goat.
I wouldn't have traveled over an hour to meet a total stranger without my husband. It's dangerous, but he is always up for adventures and she sounded really upset. As it turns out her neighbor's dog had attacked her whole herd. She only had one lone doe who was devastated. The woman has been her at our house, but I don't remember her. She gave us Maggie along with her papers.
Maggie was in the barn giving birth when the dogs attacked. This woman couldn't defend her herd due to not owning a weapon. This is so ridiculous! I have owned a weapon (GUN) since I was five. I was taught how to use it, clean it, and proper storage. I was raised right! She watched as her whole herd was brutally killed. During this whole scene Maggie didn't properly clean her babies and they suffocated in their sacks. She must have been so terrified. I feel so bad for her.
The owner was so heart broken. I asked her if she wanted her back when things calmed down. Apparently, this isn't the first time and she is done. I offered her money, and when she wouldn't take it. I placed it in her truck on our way out.
THOUGHTS:
1. If you're a woman living by yourself, buy a gun.
2. Put electric round the bottom and turn it up really high on the outside of your night pen/ barn.
3. Defend your livestock! I would have shot the dogs with no hesitation, but if I ran out of bullets I would pick up a shovel and use it! Those goats depend on you!
4. I have killed dogs trying to dig in. It doesn't bother me.
5. Don't just give up. I do understand why though.
6. Make those neighbors pay for the goats.
7. They wouldn't want us as neighbors. I would get even, share photos to the cops, and made them pay for everything. We don't live in city limits, but things would have been made right. She woman has footage of the dogs. TURN IT IN!
