Farming in Old Tires
Wow! This farming season I have decided to use old tires to farm in. I will be showing a progression of this project throughout the summer. Every year I have tried to be motivated about farming, but the result is the same, failure or lack of interest. I think my generation has lost touch with reality. We cannot provide for ourselves without grocery stores, and honestly, I think this is our down fall.
I saw this project summer challenge. I live near a junk yard and decided to take it on. Below I have shared my first instillation of hopefully many tires. Unfortunately, being in a small rural town has somewhat limited my resources. I have only located two tires, and will have to resort to using regular car tires.
This is a green bean patch. I gathered my seeds from my grandma. She saves seeds every year and replants them. The darkened potting soil is a mixture of horse manure and guinea pig waste. My awesome neighbors contributed the horse pooh. Projects are often too messy or time consuming, but I have managed to spend a few minutes everyday working on these. Our house is located in the mountains, so finding flat ground wasn't really a choice. I say our bank behind the house and thought .... light bulb! I dug out flat spaces for my tires along the bank. (This was the back breaking part)

Under the tire is small rock that I took form the creek to allow for seepage. I commandeered my father to cut the tops out of the tires. I couldn't really get my ideas to work.... I know you are all thinking "how will she string up the beans?" Well, I plan on taking river cane and building a brace over the top. I will be posting updates. Feel free to comment your ideas. By the way I now have two tires. :)
