How to Survive Southern RULES:

Well everyone needs to know a few rules about moving into the South. I believe I will be able to help with the transition. You may believe that things are the same everywhere, but you are WRONG! We enjoy a slower pace of life with the ease of southern pleasures.      First off, don't come here and try to run everything. This cannot be stressed enough. I understand that you moved here to retire, and that you want this place to be like home. Remember you moved here for change (not to change this place) 2nd-    Sweet tea is something we drink and it hurts our elders feelings when you do not accept a glass of it. Don't be rude, and consider it a peace offering. My grandmother only offers you tea in order to get to know you better. Saying no is like slapping her in the face. 3rd-  We fry things. If you don't want to eat it don't put in on your plate. Do not say how nasty it is. If its on your plate, you better have something positive...

A Second JOB

Yeah!   It's pretty sad to say this, but teachers cannot make it on their own with this salary. There is no possible way for an individual to live on their own. With the high prices of rent and power, how are our people supposed to survive?        I had no choice, but to seek out additional money. I thought that a teacher's salary could support me and pay a majority of my bills, but unfortunately it cannot. After filling out many applications the local BP has hired me. Yesterday was my first day and it was exactly what I had expected.       I work with a crew of women that are very focused. I love it and there is no stress as to what it expected of me. Everything is clearly written out and they provide training for ever aspect of my position. What more could I ask for? It was a relief  to be able to go to work and not worry. The stress of teaching has really made me think about my career options. BP trainin...

Western North Carolina

Image
I'm thankful to live in a place as lovely as this. Above I have shared a photo of my commute from work. I only wish the road was this straight the whole way.  When driving back from a long day, who wouldn't be pleased with this scene. It has been a perfect day, and even the motorcycles didn't bother me. Tourism is what helps this community thrive and so, I'll deal with their excessive speeding if it means income for my town.      The end to a day like this can only be an extended ride on the back of ta ford truck. Wind in hair and the sound of dual exhaust. I know this may seem strange to some outsiders, but it's something I've always done and enjoyed. The life of small  town person can be this simple and rewarding. In the end it's the simple things in life that matters.

Securing a Part Time Job

Well ...          I finally have a job lined up for the summer, and here are a few tips that I would suggest to anyone:  - arrive on time and be dressed to empress - Shake their hand and answer all questions honestly - smile and say thank you for your consideration - have some sort of question to ask them      I will now be working as a fueling station attendant.   It isn't much but it was the only thing available with in driving distance. Today was my first day, but it wasn't as bad as I expected. You would have thought it was a high skill job. All the different directions that I received.  You are there to serve the customers, keep the place clean, and smile: was all that I needed.

Singing in the CAR!

I love driving in my vehicle with the windows down and the music turned up! While driving home every day you can find me singing along with STAR 102.1. People pass be me and stare.   Its days like this that driving home is such a blessing.   I cannot believe how much of a stress reliever. My mood decides the genre of music that will be blaring from my speakers. Today I was singing along with Three Doors Down when a cop pulled alongside of me. He was shaking his head and laughing. I had been using my steering wheel as a drum station. Wow, sometimes I can really be an idiot. My classes were long and annoying. Having students’ complete EOG practice is like trying to get them to eat vegetables. They just hate it. All I needed was some alone time with my radio and singing to myself. In the afternoons I can tell what kind of mood my mom is in based upon the loudness of her music. The happier she is the louder the music. She actually listens to the same music that I do, ...

FitBit Review

OH lord! Here we go again...           Getting on these health band wagons is going to be the death of me! I want to loose weight and I can loose weight, but I have to have some type of visual reminder. I'm the world's worst person to forget to go back and plug in what I have ate. I need something right then and there to help me, so my friend recommended the FitBit to help with the exercoiing part. I should have waited and reviewed the device before I purchased it, but my friend had hers for over a year and it has done an amazing job. I think it is detrimental to its success not to have a good customer support program. I could not find my original packaging and therefore couldn’t find the identification number that was needed. It was supposed to be waterproof, but that didn’t work out. As I was taking my shower the water destroyed my new FitBit. I was so dishearten to look down   and not see the lights. The FitBit is by far the prettiest and mo...

Reading Comprehension

Reading comprehension starts at the basic level, fluency. You have to be able to read fluently to understand the content. In my classroom I have observed students adding words that weren’t there or simply skipping them. My students were stumbling over words that they should have know as seventh graders, but someone has never taken the time to sound them out for them. Parents please keep your children in mind when reading with them. Ask them questions and observe them actually reading. I know that one day I may have kids, and you can bet that they will be overly prepared for school. My mom made me the person I am today by spending quality time with me. She always encouraged me to pick up a book. Usually, she made me read aloud to her. I know we all have busy days and that we are tired in the afternoons, but there comes a time and place where we need to step up. There are several ways to enhance your child's performance. read with them ask questions paraphrase a passage ...

SILENCE

Silence… It’s so strange to hear (or the lack of) noise after a day of writer’s workshops. My students were either trying to sleep or overly talkative. With all the heavy rain and storms, we as a class had to fight sleep. As I sat alone in my classroom at the end of the day I wondered who was around? It has been a very long struggling day. It’s like pulling teeth to get them to write. Classroom management has to be on point when I have days like this. I finally decided to take a moment to myself this afternoon. All my students had left for the day and I sat at my desk and wrote ten GOOD things that I completed today. Silence is all that I had for company and I was thankful for it too. I often look over the simple pleasures in life, but not today. Silence is like the lingering shadow that creeps behind us during the day only to attack us at our most venerable moment. The rain was seeping down the windows while I sat and watched with amazement at how peaceful the c...

Mondays

Mondays are the best day out of the week, and honestly I enjoy working on Mondays. The kids have had the opportunity to rest and prepare for another week.   Today has been quite productive. My classes completed altered book pages and EOG prep.   Well some of my classes got to.   If they cannot follow directions I'm not going to let them loose with paint.      Mondays are the only day through the week that I do not have afterschool commitments at attend. That means I get off early and head home.   The recent storms have caused somewhat of a problem for me. I cannot get adequate sleep, so naturally I'm sluggish.

How to Cure Boredom

Well just don’t sit there!   Get up off that couch!    Around here there isn’t a lot of options for our youth.   Most of them gather at our McDonalds and sit in the back of their jacked up trucks. Yes, this is a sight to see, and most of our tourist find this sight to be hilarious, and they wonder why people have this illusion of how southern life is?        Find a spot on the creek bank and remember to pack a picnic. The creek is the perfect place to cool off and enjoy a hot day. I guess the red necks would include a cooler of beer to that list, but I wouldn't. As the day wears on you can build a fire and roast marshmallows until your heart's content.      Pack up and go to the lake, even if it's raining the lake is the place to be. Our county built a local fake beach and all the overly tanned bodies can be found there. I've only set foot in that sand one time. I cannot see why everyone wan...
